Impact Windows Engineered to Withstand Hurricanes and Home Runs

Certain Pella® windows can halt speeding baseballs and others can resist hurricane-force winds. How?

As far as hurricane-resistance, Pella HurricaneShield® windows and patio doors rated to ASTM E1996 missile D rating are thoroughly tested for impact resistance.

Tests involve blasting a two-by-four at the window to make sure glass remains intact. We use our hurricane cannon to launch the wood, which covers 50 feet per second.

It Started with Hurricane Testing

We concluded, if we could design a hurricane window with impact-resistant glass, surely we could discover a solution that could stop home runs from Major League Baseball teams.

When Pella was approached to help outfit a historic building near Wrigley Field with home run-resistant windows, that’s exactly what we did.

We overhauled our hurricane cannon to evaluate the home run-resistant windows. We fired baseballs from the cannon at an angle and speed that would reconstruct the force of a home run.

Our tempered glass weathered the hits best because it’s tougher and safer than standard annealed glass.

All About Physics

It warrants a speed of more than 100 mph and a height greater than 100 feet to send a baseball out of the park.

In Wrigley’s situation, we determined the baseballs would be moving at about 60 mph upon hitting windows.

But we exceeded requirements and checked impact resistance up to 100 mph.

More Benefits of Tempered Glass in Pella® Windows

Even if you’re not worried about an MLB home run propelling toward your home, there are many reasons to choose durable, tempered glass in your Pella windows and doors.

It’s good for homeowners who want an additional level of security from their windows or patio doors. Or those who are bringing up the next great baseball player.

Look at the benefits and highlights of Pella tempered glass options:

  • Toughened glass like what is used in car windows.
  • Used where damages from broken glass are a concern.
  • Usually shatters into small, square parts rather than sharp shards if broken.
  • Glass doesn’t fall apart if shattered.

Tempered glass is available in all Pella windows and patio doors. To discover more about impact windows and if they may be right for your home, call Pella of Boise at 208-373-0002. Or, schedule a free, in-home consultation online.
